Q: (You are making your debut in the world of show business soon.) How do you feel about it at the moment?
ZUNO: At first, (becoming a singer seemed like a dream.) I was just doing practice. But after doing the recording, and then the day before yesterday shooting the PV, I feel like I’m actually becoming a singer in reality. Even though it’s hard work, I’ve been enjoying it a lot.
Q: People are focussing on his great dancing after his performance of Ms.LeeHyoLee's track was shown on TV in China.
ZUNO: Even though I’d been playing sports, I still found it difficult to dance and sing at the same time. The way of breathing was so different, so while I was practising I realised that JunSoo is actually an incredible singer...How could he sing so wonderfully while dancing with such intensity? (laugh).
Q: He used to be a so-called ‘baseball kid’. He started playing at elementary school until university. But one day, for no particular reason, he started thinking about becoming an actor.
ZUNO: I started playing baseball with JunSoo when I was in the 4th grade at elementary school because my father liked it. In my 2nd year at university I wanted to do something else so I helped out in his pizza restaurant. Around that time I saw Mr.Sulkyunggu (설경구)
in a leading role, <His Voice>, then I thought ‘I want to be an actor’. After that I started making an effort to become an actor in my own way, like often going to see plays at the theatre and so on. At that time some people approached me with offers of work, but it would’ve caused problems for my brother if I’d started working too soon, so I decided to prepare properly. So I went to study in China to expand my knowledge, and that was how I met the staff from my present agency.
Q: That chance meeting made up your mind to debut in China, and actually your manager recommended you to become a singer, didn’t he?
ZUNO: Luckily becoming a singer is one of my goals because I’d already been thinking it’d be a fantastic experience after seeing what happened to my brother. But playing baseball didn’t give me any opportunities to sing...we had to shout things like “Come on!!!” etc. during training.... but that also affected me badly during the time (laugh) My brother, being a much more experienced singer than me, gives me a lot of advice.
Q: As you look at your brother’s situation being near him, we assumed that you’d also understand some of the difficulties in the world of music and dance?
ZUNO: Yes, that’s true. I certainly think it’s tough when I see what he’s been through, but still my dream of becoming a singer and an actor is bigger than that. What we gain makes up for the parts we lose. This is the one thing I really want to do, so it will definitely make me happy.
Q: You’re the sort of person who gets excited to full-throttle when people praise you.
Z:I’m blood type B (laugh). My brother is also B and he’s a typical B (laugh). When we were kids, we went to Lotte World, and one of the staff announced < Anyone wearing red clothes, please come up on the stage!> JunSoo and I were wearing pink clothes, but JunSoo immediately went up onto the stage...I thought < My clothes are not red...> so that I didn’t go up...that sort of differences you can see (in B type behaviour there).
Q: So what has JunSoo, such a strong B type man, advised his brother to do?
Z: When I have an filmed interview, I get nervous so I sometimes speak too fast or say things which don't make sense. <In that situation, do some deep breathing and speak clearly.> He also told me how to look after my throat the day before my recording. Before I did my first show, I was really nervous because I was going to sing in front of 30,000 people. I didn’t know what to do in my first rehearsal, and I felt upset and even thought about going home. So I phoned my brother, and he said some really nice things, “You must think you are the best. While you’re singing, don’t think about how to sing better, just think about how happy you are that such a lot of people have come to see you. That will make you perform much better than you expected. ”
In fact, I repeated his words like a “spell” and the tension went. Say my usual level is 100. In rehearsal I could only perform at about 20, but in the actual performance I could do more than 100. JunSoo was so proud of me, and said “You are great!” (laugh).
I really appreciated that and said “Thanks a lot. I’m so grateful for all your help”. I’d been joking with him that I wouldn’t need his advice, but on stage I actually had to take action, I realised how he is very important to me (laugh). I might be a bad person, don't you think?...because I rely on him only when I need him.
Q: According to ZUNO's manager, on the day they were shoting the PV, JunSoo arrived around dawn with fried-chicken for him and for all his staff.
Z: On that day JunSoo was performing his musical so I didn’t tell him about the date of the PV shoot. But when we were speaking to each other (on the phone), I joked “you won’t even come and cheer your brother up when he’s shooting”. He replied “I’m sorry 형(my brother), but it’s quite a long way from here....”, but in the end he came to see me. I knew he must’ve been exhausted, so I really appreciate his visit.
Q: Even though they are twins and have grown up in the same environment, their personalities are very individual.
Z: My brother is more manly, not chatty and he looks after things in a nice way in the background. I express affection straight. JunSoo is decisive, but I worry about this and that. When I worry about things, JunSoo makes a decision like “why don't we do this!”.
In our childhood we were very similar, I think, but only just recently I’ve started to understand the differences between us. Since we were kids our body shape has always been different, so I sometimes felt frustrated when I was told “You’ve been eating your brother's (food)” (laugh). I think twins like us are very unique (having such differences). When we see our relatives, they see grown-up JunSoo, and then say “you’ve caught up with your brother!”, but then look at me “(we thought) impossible...”.
Q: Since they were kids, they’ve always enjoyed being together, and ZUNO is looking forward to travelling in Japan with his brother, just the two of them.
Z: We were always happy playing together, so we never went to visit our friends, they visited us instead... like... “Hey, Twins! Play with us!”. I’ve never had a fight with JunSoo, only hitting each other for a joke (laugh). I’ve been to Japan twice when my brother started working there. I just watched my brother's concerts and didn’t do much sight-seeing. But I know that Japanese people are kind and the cities are clean, and also I know that people queue up in front of restaurants serving the best food...(laugh). I love Sushi very much!!, and meat. I love anything with meat (laugh)
Q: ZUNO loves eating so he weighed 94kg when he played baseball. But when he decided to go into show business, he went on a diet and now weighs 75kg. He says he looks after his body.
Z: I’m careful what I eat and go to the gym. So far I’ve lost quite a lot of weight so now I have some rice with one of my three meals. I often have chicken breast...some breast meat and some sweet potatoes. Starting the diet was very hard. I could only eat a little so it gave me a lot of stress. I managed to keep it going with my manager's help. I take supplements to replace the minerals I’ve lost from the diet. Also it’s important to take care of my throat so I need some nourishment for that. When I get excited I speak too loud and talk too much (laugh),so it’s not a good to talk when I have to sing. My throat’s weak, and I’m the type of person who uses their throat a lot when speaking. That's why I try not to talk too much. It’s very tough for me (laugh). If I have to change my work schedule due to my health condition, I know that would make problems for all the people around me. So I don’t let myself stay out late, (even though I want to). I manage to control myself like once or twice out of 3 times.
Q: Asking what he likes to doin his free time, he said “Nothing special (laugh)”.
Z: (Blood type) B type is something like that...I think. Having no plan... If friends ask me to go out, I would...maybe. Same as my brother, I don’t like drinking much, so if I go out I’d probably go bowling with my mates (laugh) some kind of sports. But I prefer hanging out with my brother, just the two of us.
Q: Could you give a closing message for our readers?
Z: For the readers of 「Han-Ryu Pia (Korean-Wave Pia)」, I’d really appreciate it if you guys would support me as a singer ZUNO, not as JunSoo's brother. Soon I’ll be doing my ShowCase performance in Japan, so I’d like many people to come and support me. I shall work hard from now on,so please show me your enthusiasm as always. Opportunity has come, I’d certainly love to work in Japan. Thanks very much for all your support.
Please love 「Han-Ryu Pia」 (laugh)
Please love my brother as always.
Arigato-Gozaimasu! (Thank you!)
